A report by BBC News states that over 9 million people have been affected by “super” Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda that struck the islands of the Philippines over the weekend. Estimates are that over 10,000 people have died and most of the survivors are struggling to survive due to a lack of food and shelter, with a tropical depression bringing more rain to the ravaged area later this week. In response, OCUCF has launched our CanHelp program to collect donations which will be directed to relief efforts. Tax receipts will be issued for personal donations of $10.00 or greater. Donations can be made at participating credit union branches or through our secure online payment portal here.
The federal government has already pledged $5 million dollars in relief dollars and will also match dollar for dollar any personal donations made. OCUCF will be directing donations to the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF) who is one of our international partners already providing support to credit union and co-operative initiatives in the region.
To sign up for CanHelp, or if you have any questions, please contact Devon Rowan at [email protected] or 289-335-1152 ext. 230. If you would like to participate in the program at your branch, please download the CANHELP Instruction Sheet – Philippines 2013 and the donation tracking sheet (CanHelp-spreadsheet-Philippines).
Are you up for the “Challenge”?
Once again our successful $20K Food Bank Challenge is underway. Beginning November 1st, and running until February 28, 2014, or until all of the $20K has been allocated, credit unions are eligible to apply for a matching grant of up to $2,000 to support their local food banks during the holiday season. For more details, contact Devon Rowan at [email protected] Help us fight hunger during the holidays.
Thank you to everyone who came on on June 10th, 2013 to the Royal Ontario Golf Course to support our Golf Tournament and Culinary Classic! Despite a drizzly, damp day, everyone who attended brought their game faces and smiles and helped us raised close to $40,000! We also ran another amazing cooking class courtesy of Arvinda’s Authentic Indian Cuisine and Whole Foods in Oakville. A full list of sponsors will appear in our upcoming newsletter. Mark your calendars for next year’s tournament and culinary class- Monday, June 9th, 2014 back at Royal Ontario!
On Co-op and Credit Unions from across the province are excitedly working together to take the Co-operative Young Leaders Development Program to the next level in 2013! In order to truly train and mentor our sector’s future leaders, CYL is moving towards a program which will engage our teens year-round, providing a better ROI for sponsors, and some amazing, resume-building opportunities for the youth. With this model, the week at the CYL summer program will serve as training ground for the great work that our young co-operators will do with their sponsoring CU’s throughout the year. The potential benefits to your CU go well beyond simply having a youth speak at your AGM! For more information on how to get involved, contact [email protected].
